Lessons at Tapestry Music White Rock
Locations
We have 12 teaching studios at two locations. Six
studios are next to our store at 1335 Johnston Road in White Rock. Six more studios are just
up the street at 1373 Johnston Road.
Fees
Options are available from 30, 45 or 60 minute
lessons taught one-one-one. $32 every 30 min and scheduled weekly, with payment due monthly
in advance.

Our Teachers

Strauss Whiteside-Hope Rapp
Instruments: Piano
Availability: Mon
Strauss is a prolific piano teacher and jazz pianist
from the South Surrey area of BC. Strauss started his music study at the age of 10 and has
devoted his life to the art, playing in many bands and combos throughout high school and
university. While attending KPU to complete his Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts, he studied
classical piano under the esteemed Jane Hayes, as well as jazz with famous bassist Jodi
Proznick. While studying at KPU, Strauss discovered a love for teaching music, as well, and was
hired as a piano instructor at Tapestry Music in 2018, and has taught there ever since. In 2021,
Strauss completed his second degree, a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Music, from UBC, and
has since been hired by the Surrey School District as a band and choir TTOC.
Strauss is also a member of Hamilton Street Swing, a jazz combo consisting of a bassist,
trumpet/vocals, and Strauss on keys. Hamilton Street Swing performs at many venues for KPU and
private ceremonies, dinners, and swing dances around the Fraser Valley.

Angela Zhang
Instruments: Piano

Angela has been teaching with Tapestry Music in the city of White Rock since 2019. With over 15
years of teaching experience, Angela has taught students of various ages, abilities and
background. From preliminary to advanced level students, classical pianistic technique is taught
and emphasized. Musical styles introduced include classical, pop, rock, jazz, and musical
theatre. Lessons take place either in person or online. Examinations through the Royal
Conservatory of Music in Toronto provide a national standard for measuring progress and
achievement.

Yuting Guo
Instruments: Piano

Yuting Guo, originally from Guangzhou, China, earned
her Master's degree in Piano Performance from South China Normal University. She has a rich
professional background, having served as an adjunct piano accompanist at the School of Arts,
South China University of Technology. Additionally, she has contributed her expertise as a piano
teacher at the Seychelles National Music Academy and as a piano accompanist for the Seychelles
National Choir.
With an impressive 15 years of teaching experience, Ms. Guo has successfully guided students of
diverse age groups, consistently achieving outstanding results in her teaching endeavors. Her
dedication and proficiency have been recognized through various accolades. Notably, she has been
honored as an Excellent Instructor at prestigious events such as the 2021 GBA Youth
International Piano Open Competition and the Canadian International Piano Competition China
Division. Furthermore, she has received recognition at the 3rd Liszt International Youth Piano
Competition China Division, the 9th Steinway & Sons National Youth Piano Competition (the
83rd Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition China Division), and the 6th
International German Irmler Piano Competition National Finals.
Ms. Guo possesses a remarkable ability to identify the unique interests of each student and
tailor her teaching approach accordingly. This personalized approach not only fosters effective
learning but also allows her students to experience the profound joy of music through the piano.

Shawn Julie

Steve Johnston

Steve Johnston is a distinguished musician whose
virtuosity on the double bass has resonated through a prolific career spanning a diverse range
of musical genres. As the Principal Double Bassist, his talents have graced renowned orchestras
including the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, Skagit Valley Symphony Orchestra, Western
Washington University Symphony, Chamber Orchestras, and the White Rock Community Orchestra.
Simultaneously, Steve has made indelible marks in the realm of jazz, collaborating with
luminaries like the Panorama Trio at the Hotel Vancouver, Ron Rutherford's Preservation of Swing
Big Band, the Fraser MacPherson Quartet alongside Oliver Gannon and Rudy Petschauer, and the
Bill Perkins Quartet with Jud Sherwood and Raul. His eclectic journey includes memorable
performances with the Charlie Rouse Quartet featuring Greg Williamson and Bill MacDonaugh, as
well as enchanting vocalists like Ernestine Anderson, Dee Daniels, and Cheryl Bentyne in jazz
trios.
Notably, Steve has lent his musical direction to the Cloverdale United Church choir and boasts a
coveted Life Member status with the Vancouver Musicians Association Local 145. His extensive gig
history includes hundreds of performances across Vancouver's hotels, theaters, bars, and
restaurants, and he's embarked on four exhilarating tours across BC and Alberta, spanning
traditional jazz, rock bands, and live theater productions. Steve Johnston's musical prow

Jay Duncan

Jay Duncan has been playing guitar for 45 years and
enjoys teaching beginner to intermediate players, young and old alike. In college, he studied
classical guitar up to RCM grade 10, and then fell in love with the blues and songwriting. Over
the years, he made a few recordings and spent time training up and empowering young people in
church music settings. He is a dedicated father of 6 beautiful kids and spends as much time with
them as possible!
As a young man he became fascinated with building and repairing guitars, and has been a guitar
builder and designer now for 30 years, and is the founder of the DuncanAfrica Society – which
has been teaching young men and women in Uganda to build fine guitars since 2007. Jay spent 7
years working for the infamous Jean Larrivee Guitar company in Vancouver and developed a passion
for fine woods, techniques and great tone under Jeans’ influence.
Whether you are looking to learn the basics, or to understand the instrument itself better and
ask the deep questions that will take your playing experience to a new level, you are invited to

Stephan Boies
Instruments: Guitar, Ukulele

As a versatile and bilingual(English, French)
educator and musician, Stephan has held numerous professional roles in the music industry,
including guitar and music theory teacher, coupled with extensive live performance experience.
Holding a Bachelor's in Music from Musicians Institute's G.I.T. in Los Angeles and a Diploma in
Classical Guitar studies from the CEGEP of Sherbrooke, Quebec, he brings a wealth of academic
and real-world expertise to his teaching.
Stephan's teaching philosophy is rooted in passion, patience, and adaptability. He takes pride
in his ability to effectively teach students of all ages, seamlessly adjusting his methods to
accommodate diverse learning styles. Flexibility is a cornerstone of his approach, as he is
dedicated to tailoring strategies to meet the unique needs and preferences of each student,
fostering an encouraging learning environment where every student can thrive. With expertise
spanning classical, pop, blues, jazz, rockabilly and rock, he has performed from San Diego to
Anchorage, Vancouver to Montreal in festivals and concert venues across the US and Canada.
With over ten years of teaching experience, Stephan offers invaluable real-world insights and
expertise. His background in live performance and passion for sharing knowledge drive him to be
an outcome-driven and motivated teacher, empowering students to embark on their musical journey
with confidence and enthusiasm.

Christy Hung
Instruments: Flute and Piano
Availability: Sat
Christy started playing the piano when she was seven
and the flute when she was ten, and has fallen in love with music ever since. She has always
been involved in different areas of music, including playing in ensembles (flute quartet, youth
orchestra), singing in choirs, as well as competing in local and international competitions. In
the past, she has partaken in a multitude of RCM exams, including the RCM Associate Diploma of
the Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT) exam. She has also completed the Young Artist Collegiate
Program at the Vancouver Academy of Music, a program that trains high school students musically
and where students take courses at the college level.
Christy started teaching in 2020, and has taught people of various ages. Christy has received
the grand prize of the Crescendo International Youth Music Competition and was the RCM National
and Provincial Gold Medalist for Level 8 Flute. She is currently studying at UBC and hopes to
help students find joy in music.

Sebastian Rendon
Instruments: Clarinet and Saxophone

Sebastian is a well-rounded musician who is
well-versed in both Classical and Jazz music, on both the clarinet and the saxophone. Having
played in ensembles all over Vancouver and with a strong history of music competitions and
soloing, he has made a name for himself as a strong up-and-coming clarinetist. He is currently
studying music at UBC under the guidance of renowned player Jose Franch-Ballester, with the
dream of becoming a world-class soloist and performer.
With a history of teaching students throughout Canada, Sebastian has learned how to bring out
the best in every player he teaches. His patient and encouraging teaching has helped bring
success to the young musicians who study with him. His students have gone on to become section
leaders in their ensembles and win provincial band festivals.

Terry Keller
Instruments: Trumpet

Terry started his journey with the trumpet at 13,
inspired by his father, Allen Keller, who not only played the trumpet but also served as Terry’s
first music teacher. Growing up in Richmond, B.C., Terry benefited from a vibrant and energetic
high school music program. Under the guidance of his band directors, Mr. John Hudson and Mr. Ken
Hackwell, Terry's passion for music continued to grow. During that time Terry also had the
privilege of studying privately with well known Vancouver trumpeter Stewart Barnett. After
graduating, he was accepted to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
While at Berklee, Terry participated in some of the top student ensembles, and studied under
notable trumpet instructors such as Wes Hensel, Jeff Stout, Greg Hopkins, and Ray Kotwica. He
amassed valuable performance experience throughout Boston and the Northeastern U.S., playing in
a variety of settings including big bands, small jazz groups, church performances, pit
orchestras, recording sessions, and R&B bands. Terry graduated with a Bachelor of Music
degree from Berklee in 1988, returning to Vancouver in 1989.
Since his return, Terry has maintained an active performance schedule with various bands across
a spectrum of musical styles. He expresses, “I’ve had the chance to play with some incredible
bands, and I keep busy with numerous musical groups and freelance projects. In 2004, I picked up
private trumpet teaching again, collaborating with the amazing team at Tapestry Music in White
Rock, B.C. This work fuels my passion!”

Andrew Radke
Instruments: Trombone

Taking to the trombone in sixth grade and never
looking back, Andrew Radke is an active low brass player and educator in Vancouver, BC.
Comfortable playing in many different styles of music, (classical, jazz, musical theatre,
contemporary, even jazz metal!) his performing experiences have sent him to many places across
the country and beyond. He has been honoured to have studied privately with two of Canada’s
finest trombonists in Brad Muirhead and Dennis Esson in high school and at Capilano University.
While a member of the jazz program’s top large ensemble A Band, he had the privilege of sharing
the stage with many great jazz artists including Ernie Watts, Don Thompson, Phil Dwyer, Dave
Liebman, Claudio Roditi , Mike Murley and Randy Brecker. A passionate music educator in the
public school system eager to share the joys of musical experiences with others, he has also
taught students with a wide range of playing experience in private lessons, group lessons and
masterclasses. You can usually hear him in various jazz big bands or musical theatre shows
around Vancouver. He believes in providing a welcoming learning environment that will equip
students with strong playing fundamentals to become confident musicians, help them to explore
their musical tastes, and also introduce them to new styles for as much musical enrichment as
possible.

Don Kelley
Instruments: Violin and Electric Bass

Don's career in music has reached across genres and
instruments. Currently, Don is Concertmaster of the VPO under maestro Jin Zhang.
With an A.R.C.T. in violin performance, undergrad and private studies at UBC School of Music,
and additional violin coaching in Vancouver and San Francisco, Don has a lot of knowledge in
many styles of music. His mother, a concert pianist, taught Don to read music before he could
read and write. While his main instrument is violin, he has a second career as bass guitarist in
multiple styles of music, playing with famous Vancouver musicians and cofounding groups in rock,
funk, jazz, fusion, neo-classical, and more.
In 1991 Don won the VCC/VPO concerto competition with his performance of the Mendelssohn Violin
Concerto, and then performed as soloist with several orchestras live and on tv over the
following years. Don also was first violinist of the Romanza Quartet, Animato Quartet, and
concertmaster and founder of the Pacific Chamber Orchestra.
Don has been teaching music for most of his career using RCM method, with a focus on reading and
interpreting music, and also coaches students of all ages in solo, chamber and orchestral
playing.

Jeremy Ferland
Instruments: Violin

Violinist Jeremy Ferland has a passion for
communication through music. He has appeared as a soloist with the Victoria Chamber Orchestra,
the University of Victoria Orchestra, and Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, among others. He
regularly plays first violin in the Vancouver Island Symphony, and also appears as a freelance
performer throughout British Columbia. He is a founding member of the Khimera Trio, which brings
obscure works and popular favourites to a broad audience.
After initial studies with Dolores Vann and Arthur Polson, he obtained Performance and Teaching
Diplomas from the Victoria Conservatory of Music, under the tutelage of Burkhard Godhoff. He
also completed a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in violin performance in the class of
Sharon Stanis at the University of Victoria. He has participated in lessons and masterclasses
with renowned musicians such as Pinchas Zukerman, Eugene Fodor, Régis Pasquier, Tadeusz Gadzina,
Gwen Hoebig, and Yu Lina (the esteemed Chinese pedagogue who premiered the Butterfly Lovers’
Concerto).
As a teacher, he has done extensive research into historical pedagogical methods, and seeks to
integrate the knowledge of the last three centuries of violin teaching into his current
practice, while also imparting his love of music to the next generation. His students have won
top awards at music festivals and RCM examinations.

Jason Yan
Instruments: Voice, Piano

Taiwanese-born Tenor Jason Yan moved to Hong Kong
with his family when he was 14 years old. At the age of 18, his music teacher in secondary
school found his talent about music and singing. Jason has been studying music and vocal
technique with her during the secondary school, after a year vocal training he won The Hong Kong
Schools Music Festival Vocal Solo Chinese Language 1st runner up and Foreign Language 2nd runner
up in 2015. His outstanding performance shows his talent in vocal and music.
Mr. Yan has earned his Bachelors Degree in Arts (Honours) in Music Studies.

Martin Brosnan
Instruments: Cello

Martin has been playing the cello since he was four
years old and has always thought of it as an integral part of his identity. He has performed
with many ensembles in both the U.S. and Canada across many genres including classical and pops
orchestras, jazz ensembles, musical theater pit orchestras, and chamber ensembles. Additionally
he plays the double bass and bass guitar in several ensembles in metro Vancouver.

Gavin Tang
Instruments: Piano, Music Theory
Availability: Wed, Sat
Gavin started learning piano at the age of 5. By the
age of 11, he had completed Level 10 piano in China before immigrating to Canada. During high
school, he started teaching piano and music theory to a diverse range of students, customizing
lessons to suit individual goals and skill levels. Gavin later earned his ARCT diploma in Piano
Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Science degree from Simon
Fraser University.
Gavin has participated in multiple music festivals, recitals, and piano competitions both in
China and in Canada. He is passionate about piano teaching and music, and he hopes to share his
musical knowledge with more music lovers. Besides playing piano, he enjoyed playing the clarinet
and guitar in his spare time.
As a piano teacher, he encourages his students to be expressive and creative musicians. His
philosophy centers on cultivating the joy and enthusiasm for music within each student. He
strives to create a supportive and inspiring environment where students can freely explore their
musical passions.

Jo Yawney
Instruments: Violin

“My passion is to bring the joy of music to people of all ages!”
The 3rd generation in a family of musicians, Jo has dedicated the past 40 years to helping students become musically literate while still considering it "fun". She owes her teaching philosophy, in large part, to three renowned educators who believed that successful education stems from inner comprehension, self-confidence and co-operation: Maria Montessori, Zoltan Kodaly and Shinichi Suzuki.
While raising her family in Victoria, Jo completed courses in the Montessori and Kodaly method and had extensive violin teacher training with Professor Jaroslav Karlovsky at the University of Victoria and Suzuki training with Frona Colquhoun. She taught Kodaly classes, private violin and viola lessons, elementary chamber music and theory classes and workshops. She played in the Victoria Chamber Orchestra, the University Orchestra and was a founding member of the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra (under Norman Nelson). She also sang in Capriccio Vocal Ensemble, (under Michael Gormley) Christ Church Cathedral Choir and Musica Eclectica and in Vancouver Voices (under Peter Butterfield).
Since moving to the mainland, Jo has taught violin and Kodaly classes privately, at community centres and preschools. For several years, she taught Kodaly Literacy at the Arbutus Music Academy in conjunction with the Suzuki violin program. Jo is an avid chamber music enthusiast. She has an M.A. from UBC, is fluent in Italian and has taught lyric diction classes. She has presented at several Kodaly workshops and conferences and at the BCMEA conferences in Vancouver. She is a retired Vice-President of the BC Kodaly Society and member of the National Board of the Kodaly Society of Canada.
In the pursuit of more stimulating and effective ways of conveying musical concepts, she has developed and published a series of resources for music teachers “Tune Travels” (www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Jo-Yawney) which are presently used in classrooms, music schools and by private teachers in Canada and internationally. Her teaching philosophy fosters self-confidence & co-operation in her students. Her biggest passion, other than her family, is teaching beginners of all ages to become musically literate and to play the violin.

If you fill out the lesson registration form at the store, you can start within a week. We will check the schedule for you.
Credit cards will be processed the last week before the 1st of the following month. Our lesson fee is charged monthly. (e.g., If there are 4 weeks and you're taking a 30-minute lesson, the fee is $120).
Please call us at (604)538-0906 and notify us that you want to cancel. There is no refund for any missed lesson. Make-up lessons only within the teacher’s available schedule.
