My Man Sam Jazz Ensemble
My Man Sam by Gordon Goodwin is a tribute to the late, great, brilliant arranger/composer, Sammy Nestico! The medium swing tempo is 134 BPM and the suggested written solos are for trumpet 2, alto 1, tenor 1, and trombone 1. Superb writing provides sweet sax solis, great dynamic contrasts, lead trumpet range to written B above the staff, and a wonderful shout chorus. Optional parts include flute, vibes, and more. (4:45)
Sammy would love this chart!
Adapted from Gordon's score notes:
This heartfelt arrangement was written this winter as Gordon Goodwin found out that Sammy Nestico was very ill. A Sammy arrangement motivated the eighth grade Gordon to write his first chart. They eventually became friends and colleagues, with Sammy being one of the great mentors to one of the greatest jazz minds of recent decades. Gordon stresses the Count Basie band in getting the idea behind this chart; their sense of time, the way they play together, the way they listen to each other...listen...that is what Gordon intones for this one. Listen and be part of the team. And play with joy; Gordon reinforces what we often say-finding a picture of Sammy without a huge smile is indeed rare (if it is even possible!) We are thrilled to offer this brand new chart as a remembrance of the relationship of two men responsible for so much great American music over the last 75 years.
